Uniform Origins - Avengers Part Two: The New Avengers
This sections covers the new Avengers team– consisting of Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver– that debuted in 1965 in The Avengers #16 following the departure of Iron Man, Thor, and Giant-Man and the Wasp. Over the years, this core added The Vision and Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) to its ranks, all of whom also became foundational members of the team’s several iterations up until the early 2000s, where the Avengers were officially disbanded after the Scarlet Witch’s mental breakdown destroyed Avengers Mansion and killed members Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Jack of Hearts, Hawkeye, and the Vision. The Avengers that then came from this event, consisting of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, and the Sentry, despite being referred to as The New Avengers and sharing a title of the same name, will not be covered in this section.
Hawkeye
Hawkeye
Classic
First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #57 (1964)
In-Game Release: 4.4.5 - Classic Uniforms (Midmonth, October 1, 2018)
Clint Barton’s first outing as a superhero resulted in him being mistaken for a criminal, where he eventually teamed up with Black Widow, following along in her criminal activities despite wanting to be a hero because he thought she was hot. When Widow abandoned him after a fight with Iron Man, Clint decided to truly become a hero, eventually being recruited to the second iteration of the Avengers after being vouched for by Iron Man along with Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, referring to the group as “Cap’s Kooky Quartet”. His time with the team initially involved him disrespecting Captain America’s authority, countless failed attempts at wooing Scarlet Witch, and taking up the Goliath mantle from Hank Pym, only to return to being Hawkeye after the Kree-Skrull War.
Over the decades, Hawkeye remained a core member of the Avengers, even forming his own team with his (now ex-)wife Mockingbird known as the West Coast Avengers after fighting the villain known as Crossfire (and losing his hearing in the process). He died during Avengers Disassembled when he flew into a Kree spaceship conjured by the Scarlet Witch’s mental breakdown, returning to life at the end of House of M when Wanda restored reality. When he returned, he sought Wanda out in Wundagore Mountain for closure, only to find her without her memories of being the Scarlet Witch and depowered. He then proceeded to sleep with her despite knowing this fact, and this Wanda he met was later retconned to be a Doombot. This has no relevance to his original time as an Avenger, I just wanted you to know Hawkeye had sex with a robot that he thought was an amnesiac Scarlet Witch. Ew.
Wastelanders
First Appearance: Old Man Hawkeye #1 (2018)
In-Game Release: 10.6 - Wastelanders (December 26, 2024)
Forty-five years have passed since the Red Skull and the world’s super villains took over the world, and Hawkeye has since spent his days as a bodyguard for hire. When he is diagnosed with glaucoma and faced with limited time before being blinded, Clint decides to embark on a quest for revenge on Baron Zemo and the Thunderbolts–who betrayed him during the Red Skull’s attack and intentionally kept him alive to torment him–travelling across the US hunting down the members along with Kate Bishop, all while also being hunted by Bullseye. After his blindness sets in and his revenge complete, he travels to Asia and receives training from Stick, revealed to be Matt Murdock. Years later, he returns to America and recruits Wolverine to deliver vials of the super soldier serum to a group that intends to become the new Avengers and tackle the Red Skull, only for this to be a hoax and getting Hawkeye killed.
Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch
Uncanny Avengers
First Appearance: Avengers & X-Men: Axis #9 (2014)
In-Game Release: 5.5 - Uncanny Avengers + New Agents of Atlas (November 27, 2019)
Shortly after the Avengers Unity Squad–the in-universe title for the Uncanny Avengers that consisted of both Mutant and human heroes created to bolster relations between the two after the events of Avengers vs. X-Men– was reassembled after the events of Axis, the Scarlet Witch and new member Quicksilver journeyed to Counter-Earth to discover the truth of their heritage after discovering that Magneto was not their biological father, soon discovering that on top of not being Magneto’s children, they were also never mutants in the first place: both Wanda and Pietro got their powers thanks to experiments done to them by the High Evolutionary when they were babies, with their genetic code being deliberately displayed as possessing the X-Gene. It is as stupid as it sounds.
All-New, All-Different
First Appearance: Scarlet Witch Vol. 2 #1 (2015)
In-Game Release: 5.9.5 - Scarlet Witch (Midmonth, April 1, 2020)
After her recent discoveries, Wanda decides to step away from the Avengers in order to instead deal with recent magical disturbances worldwide with the ghost of Agatha Harkness, spurred by the fact that Witchcraft was broken, which has resulted in Wanda aging whenever she used a spell. She eventually found herself in the Witches’ Road, the domain of the Goddess of Witchcraft outside of space and time and where Wanda meets Natalya Maximoff, her biological mother and the previous Scarlet Witch before her. Natalya, as a ghost like Agatha, later reveals that she was killed by Wanda and Pietro’s biological father, but his identity is unknown to this day (this fact was revealed in the year 2017 in Scarlet Witch #14). Later, Wanda, under the possession of the Darkhold’s creator Chthon, was part of Hydra’s Avengers during Secret Empire, and later rejoined the Avengers Unity Squad, sparking a relationship with Doctor Voodoo along the way.
Scarlet Witch
First Appearance: Scarlet Witch Vol. 3 #1 (2023)
In-Game Release: 10.0.5 - Powerful Twins (Midmonth, May 22, 2024)
After reconciling with both Magneto over their family dynamics and with mutantkind by creating the Waiting Room– a plane of existence that allowed Cerebro to add over 20 million mutants to Krakoa’s resurrection pool across time and space– Wanda– now the living Darkhold after absorbing both the tome and its creator Chthon– headed to the fictional town of Lotkill to establish the Emporium: a magical shop that doubled as refuge for those in desperate need of magical help thanks to the Last Door, where those in need of the Scarlet Witch’s help can enter the shop wherever they are in the world. Along with this, she also rejoined the Avengers, and is currently apprenticing the young witch Amaranth, who was formed after Wanda, Agatha, and Natalya restored witchcraft during the All-New, All-Different era. During this period of time, Marvel also realized that it was not a good idea to have a Romani superhero be depicted as a white woman for decades, and Wanda (along with Pietro, naturally) have now been properly depicted as having tan skin, though Netmarble clearly missed the memo despite this uniform dropping a year after this change; this also applies to Quicksilver’s Mighty Avengers uniform, which also released alongside this uniform, though his uniform is from the mid 2000s where they were both depicted as white.
If you’d like to read more of Wanda’s solo adventures during this current period, it’s worth noting that her solo book has gone through three relaunches in two years, so it may be confusing for some to start reading. The proper reading order is as follows: Scarlet Witch Vol. 3 (10 issues and 1 annual, 2023) → Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver (4 issues, 2024) → Scarlet Witch Vol. 4 (10 issues, 2024) → Vision & The Scarlet Witch (Ongoing with 1 issue so far, 2025).
Quicksilver
Quicksilver
Marvel Legacy
First Appearance: Uncanny Avengers Vol. 3 #1 (2015)
In-Game Release: 4.4 - X-Men vs. Sentinels (September 13, 2018)
Eight months after the universe was remade in Secret Wars, Pietro remained in the Avengers Unity Squad alongside Rogue and Doctor Voodoo, with the team adding the returning Steve Rogers, the Human Torch, Deadpool, Spider-Man (very briefly), and the new Inhuman hero Synapse, who Pietro develops feelings for over the course of his time on the team. After being removed from the roster after his arrogance nearly cost Synapse her life fighting Juggernaut, Quicksilver assisted the Avengers against the Challenger during the No Surrender event, where he found himself trapped in a motionless dimension and forced to grapple with his inner turmoil to escape.
Uncanny Avengers
First Appearance: Uncanny Avengers Vol. 2 #1 (2015)
In-Game Release: 5.5 - Uncanny Avengers + New Agents of Atlas (November 27, 2019)
After the events of Axis–where Pietro and his twin sister Wanda discovered they were not the biological children of Magneto– Pietro joined his sister in travelling to Counter Earth in search of the truth of their lineage. See Scarlet Witch’s Uncanny Avengers section for more details as this is all he does in this new costume– and he only keeps this costume for the short five issues of this Uncanny Avengers run as the title was relaunched after Secret Wars (meaning this uniform predates Marvel Legacy).
Mighty Avengers
First Appearance: Mighty Avengers Vol. 1 #22 (2007)
In-Game Release: 10.0.5 - Powerful Twins (Midmonth, May 22, 2024)
After a turn to villainy after losing his powers at the end of House Of M (See Son of M, Silent War, and X-Factor Vol. 23 for this journey), the newly rehabilitated Quicksilver joined the Mighty Avengers in order to be closer to his sister who had randomly returned to no avail, as not only was he not able to even speak to Wanda at all, but this Wanda actually ended up being Loki in disguise. Pietro absolved himself of his villainous actions by claiming they were done by a Skrull imposter, a claim that Hank Pym and Edwin Jarvis, who themselves were replaced by Skrulls during Secret Invasion and Luna Maximoff–daughter of Pietro and the Inhuman Crystal, whose powers allowed her to sense people’s emotions–knew was not true. He later joined the faculty of Avengers Academy, where Hank Pym and his fellow faculty trained young heroes who were experimented on by Norman Osborn into being heroes, despite the truth being that their training was to ensure they would not become the villains Osborn intended them to be.
Vision
Vision
Modern and Uncanny Avengers
First Appearance: Uncanny Avengers Vol. 2 #1 (2015)
In-Game Release: 1.0 - Marvel Future Fight (Modern, March 29, 2015) and 5.5 - Uncanny Avengers + New Agents of Atlas (Uncanny Avengers, November 27, 2019)
Because these uniforms are literally the exact same design but were released four years apart, I will count both of these uniforms as one.
Vision joined the second iteration of the Avengers Unity Squad, with their first mission being rescuing Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver from Counter-Earth, with the Vision being incredibly cold towards Wanda due to her corrupting him during Avengers Disassembled and leading to his death. They later reconcile when Wanda breaks down over discovering the truth about her family and powers. After the universe was remade at the end of Secret Wars, Vision joined Iron Man, Captain America (Sam Wilson), and Thor (Jane Foster) in recruiting and mentoring Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Ms. Marvel (Kamala Kahn), and Nova (Sam Alexander) as the new mainline Avengers team, and remaining with the team when these three left and formed the Champions. Between all this, Vision moved to Arlington, Virginia, creating his own synthezoid family consisting of his wife Virgina, his son Vin, and daughter Vivian, wishing to live the American dream. It does not go well, to put it lightly.
Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel
Secret Wars: Captain Marvel & the Carol Corps
First Appearance: Captain Marvel & the Carol Corps #1 (2015)
In-Game Release: 1.4 - Secret Wars (August 25, 2015)
In Doctor Doom’s Battleworld– a world made up of remnants of destroyed realities– Carol Danvers resided in the Hala Field domain, leading her air force squad called Banshee Squadron under the rule of Doctor Doom. Wanting to venture past Hala and into explore Battleworld proper, Carol and her squadron faced off against the Thor Corps, Battleworld’s police force, eventually being successful in venturing into the area known as The Void, an area depicted as a white light in her book.
Ms. Marvel
First Appearance: Ms. Marvel Vol. 1 #20 (1976)
In-Game Release: 1.8 - Spider-Verse (December 15, 2015)
(Warning: This one is long, and will also feature the mention of sexual assault.)
After reconciling with Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) and having her two personalities of Carol Danvers and Ms. Marvel unified, Carol began wearing a new all-black suit designed by the Wasp and became an auxiliary member of the Avengers (she had been a supporting character in the book prior to this), eventually being promoted to full-time status after the Scarlet Witch’s resignation. Carol quickly integrated herself in the team, fighting the likes of Absorbing Man, the High Evolutionary, and Taskmaster before leaving due to the sudden reveal that she was three months pregnant.
(CW: Sexual assault)
In reality, Carol was impregnated by Marcus, the son of Immortus (an incarnation of Kang the Conqueror), who had captured Carol into the temporal realm of Limbo, manipulated her into falling in love with him, impregnated her with himself, and returned her to Earth in order for him to exist outside of Limbo without affecting the space-time continuum, ensuring that Carol’s pregnancy, as well as his development was accelerated in order to ensure he existed at his adult age. Upon this discovery, Carol, who was still influenced by Marcus, returned back to Limbo with him to live out their lives as Hawkeye destroyed the machine Marcus used to prevent himself from rapidly aging, and the Avengers just let it happen, with Thor even transporting them to Limbo himself. This is not a joke, this is not fanfiction, and this is not an AI prompt: this is a real comic book story that was legitimately released. Eventually coming to her senses, Carol escaped Limbo once Marcus disintegrated, moving to San Francisco to lay low. This did not last long, however as she was attacked by Rogue (who was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants at the time), leading to her losing her powers to Rogue’s absorption powers–long enough that her strength and ability to fly became part of Rogue’s power set permanently–and being taken in by the X-Men after being rescued by Spider-Woman, who would later become her closest friend.
(CW over)
After distancing herself from the Avengers and becoming a side character in Uncanny X-Men as well as taking on various new identities like Binary and Warbird, Carol eventually returned to the team proper, even leading the Tony Stark’s Mighty Avengers after the events of Civil War, joining the outlawed New Avengers after Norman Osborn restructured her team, and then took on the Captain Marvel moniker to honor Mar-Vell’s legacy in 2012, becoming a mainstay of the Avengers despite the insane and disgusting plot of Avengers #200.
The Last Avenger
First Appearance: Captain Marvel Vol. 10 #12 (2019)
In-Game Release: 7.2.5 - The Ultimates (July 14, 2021)
When the Super-Inhuman Vox Supreme blackmailed Carol into killing the Avengers in order to harness their powers by threatening to bomb every Kree refugee camp on Earth, Carol was forced to wear a suit that monitored her actions as she proceeded in her mission–except the “Avengers” Carol killed and offered to Vox were all clones part of a defunct SHIELD project, with the real Avengers being placed within the hero Singularity upon their “death”. When her plan was discovered, Carol and Vox fought, with Carol getting the upper hand as the cloned Avengers’ DNA was condensed into a liquid she was exposed to, allowing her to possess all their powers (mainly She-Hulk’s powers and Thor’s ability to wield Mjolnir). Vox was then sent to the Raft, where he wastes away as an obscure villain because no one actually cares about the Inhumans.
